So the X Factor live shows are well underway now and last week saw four hopefuls booted off, thanks to this year’s ‘big twist’, so now it’s time to push on with the charity single.
In 2011, the contestants – including those who didn’t make it through last week – will be covering 1978 hit Wishing on a Star by Rose Royce to raise money for ACT & Children’s Hospices UK.
This will be the fourth charity single done by X Factor, with previous covers including David Bowie’s Heroes and You Are Not Alone by Michael Jackson. Those looking at the X Factor betting will keep a close eye on things.
Show creator Simon Cowell said he was “thrilled” this year’s finalists will be helping out the charity, which he says does “amazing work”.
Craig Colton, the current male bookies’ favourite to win the show, said: “It’s an honour to record this song, and an honour to be a part of a charity with such a great cause.”
Sophie Habibis, meanwhile, said she loves the song and “can’t wait to release it”, adding that she hopes it does well and raises plenty of money.
In the past couple of years, the money raised has gone to Help for Heroes, with Hero by Mariah Carey becoming the fastest-selling charity single in a decade back in 2008.
This year’s charity offers support and palliative care to children and young people who aren’t expected to live to adulthood. People following the X Factor odds will be pleased the finalists are giving something back.
Barbara Gelb, CEO of the charity, said they were “delighted” to be the recipient’s of the programme’s fundraising efforts. “The money raised from this single gives us the opportunity to improve the lives of these children and families,” she said.
The single is available to download from November 20th and features vocals from all 16 finalists on the show, including favourites Janet Devlin and Misha B.
